Dr. Isack C. Rugemalila is a psychiatrist at the Ministry of Health in the United Republic of Tanzania. He earned a doctor of medicine degree from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Tanzania in 2012, and completed postgraduate training in addiction studies from Cyberjaya University in Malaysia in 2016-17. Dr. Rugemalila has been in the field of substance use prevention, treatment and recovery for more than seven years, engaged as a clinician, national trainer, researcher and supervisor of prevention, treatment and rehabilitative services in the country. He has collaborated with local non-governmental organizations and international entities, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes, the European Union Action Against Drugs and Organized Crimes, the Research Triangle Institute, and Henry M. Jackson Foundation Medical Research International. As a clinician, he has worked in a medication-assisted treatment clinic with more than 2,000 clients with opioid use disorders and other co-occurring problems. He has also been involved in various key projects including the formation of national guidelines, standard operating procedures, drug policy implementation strategy and research projects. He serves part-time as a lecturer at University of Dodoma. His goals for the fellowship are to increase services for adolescents and women, increase the nation’s competency in community-based prevention and increase the role of primary care in serving patients with addiction.
